Coordinating outfits for family photos

Booking a family photo session is not only about capturing memories-it’s an opportunity to show off your style and personalities! Choosing coordinating outfits for family photos is one of the big three decisions to be made. The other two are photographer and location, fyi!

Color Palette

The color palette you go with will heavily impact the way your photos look and feel. It is always a safe bet to choose neutrals, earthy tones, or soft pastels. If you’re wanting to add a little more contrast to either of those options, go with a charcoal gray, or deep brown, or navy!

Have one person with a pattern, someone else with a complimentary soft pattern, and others with solids that pair well with the first two! This creates a cohesive look, without giving 90’s uniform vibes with everyone in khakis and white 😉

Setting and Season

The location you are wanting and the time of year you’re wanting it, will have a massive impact on the way your photos look. If you are wanting to coordinate outfits with a bright color palette and lush greenery, I would suggest a session any time between March-October in south Mississippi. Foliage in January looks completely different than in July.

Studio Sessions

This is where your individuality radiates! There are no distractions. You can  coordinating outfits with your loved ones based off the fact that it’ll be the main focal point! The neutral backdrop in the studio allows for a clean palette as your backdrop, giving your personality and style time to shine.

Patterns and Textures

Mixing patterns and textures is also fun! Try to keep it simple, and soft. Textures add depth, and patterns such as stripes, dots, or florals are timeless. Using either of these or a combination of them will add a touch of interest to your gallery; you’ll thank me later!

Comfortability

Make sure that regardless of what you wear, you are comfortable and confident. It may sound like common sense, but if you are self conscious about your arms, avoid sleeveless clothing. If stripes are not flattering, choose polka dots instead! The colors, patterns, and coverage of your clothing is just as important as the location and photographer you choose! Try not to wear something that has you saying, “You can photoshop that, right?”

Final Thoughts

Coordinating outfits for a family photo session doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little planning and attention to detail, you can ensure everyone looks great while maintaining a relaxed, authentic vibe. Focus on colors that complement each other, mix in some textures and patterns, and most importantly, have fun. These photos will be a lasting reminder of your family’s unique style and love for years to come!
