Why You Should Hire an Experienced Wedding Photographer

Let’s be real, wedding planning comes with a lot of decisions. (Like, why are there twelve shades of ivory? And who decided chargers were a thing?) But one decision that really matters? Who you choose as your wedding photographer.

Your wedding photos are more than just pictures. They’re the way you’ll remember the tears in your friend’s eyes, your partner’s face as you walk down the aisle, and that perfect moment when you finally say “I do.” That’s why hiring an experienced wedding photographer is so important—it means your memories are in steady, capable, and creative hands.

I’m Jessie—a Mississippi wedding photographer who’s also been lucky enough to travel for destination weddings. I love natural light, timeless edits, and capturing people as they really are.

Whether we’re celebrating in your hometown chapel or on a beach in Tulum, here’s why experience makes all the difference—and what to ask to ensure your photographer is the right fit.

A Wedding Photographer Who Knows What to Look For

Because your mom’s beaming smile and your best friend’s dance moves aren’t always on the shot list.

When I walk into a wedding day, I’m not just looking for the “posed” moments. I’m scanning for the real stuff—the hand squeeze, the blink-back-tears moment, the flower girl making a run for it down the aisle.

An experienced photographer doesn’t just react to what’s happening—they anticipate it. Over the years, I’ve worked in so many lighting scenarios, timelines, and venues that reading a room and catching those little blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moments feels like second nature.

We Stay Calm When Things Get Chaotic

Because let’s be honest… there’s usually at least one hiccup.

If weddings were Pinterest-perfect from start to finish, I’d probably have way less coffee in my system. But part of what makes the day memorable is the unexpected. Rain clouds are rolling in. A boutonnière is missing. Your cousin is going rogue during the reception toast.

Experience means I’ve seen, handled, and can deliver a gallery you’ll love. A great photographer always has a plan B (and a plan C), backup gear, and the ability to pivot gracefully, so you never have to worry about your photos—even when the day takes a few turns.

Local Roots + Destination Views

Whether you’re getting married in Mississippi or jetting off somewhere dreamy, I’ve got you.

I’ve photographed weddings across Mississippi in many beautiful places—sun-drenched fields, historic homes, and charming chapels. Being local means I know how to chase golden hour in your favorite spot or recommend that one location with the perfect mix of light and mossy oaks.

But I also love to travel. Destination weddings bring their own kind of magic (and logistics), and I’m here for it.

An experienced wedding photographer can help you scout photo spots based on your vibe, work with timelines (whether traveling or staying local), and ensure your gallery feels personal and natural.

Here’s one of my favorite photo sessions!

A Style That’s Natural, Timeless, and You

No heavy filters. No weird posing. Just real, beautiful moments.

My photography style is clean and true-to-color. That means I’ll give you some direction when needed (yes, I’ll tell you what to do with your hands), but I’m also watching for the real emotion to shine through.

An experienced wedding photographer should fit your style. With them, you won’t feel overly posed or awkward—just present and connected. And when you look back at your photos, they will feel true to you—joyful, calm, in love, and entirely in the moment.

Questions to Ask Before You Book a Wedding Photographer

Once you love the style and your date + budget align, here’s what to ask next.

Even when everything seems to check out—good fit, beautiful work, reasonable price—it’s smart to ask a few key questions before booking. These will help you feel confident and ensure your photographer is ready to deliver.

Here are a few I’d ask if I were planning my own wedding (with notes from me along the way!):

  • What gear do you shoot with?

You don’t need to know all the tech specs, but this helps you know if they use professional-level equipment, especially for low-light settings like indoor ceremonies (some cathedrals have a no flash policy!)
  • Are you using both memory card slots?

Pro cameras often have dual card slots that back up each photo as it’s taken. It’s one of those little details that help protect your memories.
  • Are you familiar with my venue, or can you help find a location that fits my vibe?

If they’ve shot there before, great! If not, they should be willing to scout and find beautiful, light-filled locations that match your vision.
  • How many edited images will I receive?

Some photographers deliver 300 photos, others 1,000. It’s good to know what you’re getting, so expectations are aligned.
  • Do you include skin retouching or blemish removal?

A little polish goes a long way. I personally include light retouching—things like blemish removal or flyaways—while still keeping you looking like you.

Bonus tip: Ask what happens if it rains. Or if the timeline runs behind. Or if Uncle Bob wants to be a second shooter (kidding… kind of). An experienced wedding photographer should have calm, confident answers to everything.
